Nigerian activist and Peter Obi supporter Aisha Yesufu has vowed to remain seated during the rendition of the reintroduced national anthem, ‘Nigeria We Hail Thee’.
The socio-political activist has been in the spotlight following a viral video showing her sitting while the national anthem was recited at an event.
The video, currently circulating widely, shows the co-convener of BringBackOurGirls, BBOG, crossing her legs during the anthem.
In the video, seen by TIMELESS UPDATE, many guests at the event were surprised by Aisha’s action.
In another viral video, Aisha explained why she refuses to acknowledge the new anthem.
Citing Nigeria’s economic and security crises, she emphasized that the National Assembly should prioritize more critical issues.
She said, “To me, there is no new and old national anthem, only ‘Arise O Compatriot’ is the anthem I recognize.
“If I am at any event, I will stand for the national anthem, but if they play ‘Nigeria We Hail Thee’, I will sit and use my phone.
“That is an absurd law. The National Assembly should focus on more important matters. If they are not embarrassed, we citizens are embarrassed for them.
“That is not what they should be focusing on. Companies are leaving Nigeria, we are losing a lot, our GDP is declining, and there is no security for lives and properties.
“In the midst of all this, those who should be addressing serious issues want to bring back ‘Nigeria We Hail Thee’. We already have a national anthem.”
