The All Progressives Congress (APC) held its first reconciliation meeting with discontented aspirants from the Ondo State primary election on Thursday.
The session, presided over by party chairman Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, ended without an agreement. The APC, however, announced that discussions would continue to resolve the issues.
The primary election, which took place on April 20 and 21, saw Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa win over 15 other aspirants. Following his victory, six candidates, including Senator Jimoh Ibrahim and Olusola Oke, lodged complaints, disputing the election’s outcome.
Ganduje convened the meeting to mend the rift among the aspirants, aiming to unify the party ahead of the November 16 governorship election in Ondo State. Although several aspirants, including Governor Aiyedatiwa and 14 others, attended the meeting, some notable figures were absent.
During the discussion, Ganduje encouraged the attendees to prioritize party unity and learn from his own political experiences. Despite his appeals, none of the aspirants agreed to retract their challenges.
Additionally, aspirants like Ibrahim, Oke, and former finance commissioner Wale Akintetirinwa declined to join the group photo following the meeting.
After the session, the APC’s deputy national publicity secretary, Duru Meseko, told the media that the party would continue discussions with the aspirants to find a common understanding before the upcoming election.
