The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has ordered the deployment of a Special Operations Brigade to Sokoto and Kebbi States as part of intensified efforts to eradicate the notorious Lakurawas sect. This action builds on the successes recorded under Operation FOREST SANITY III (CHASE LAKURAWAS OUT).
On December 13, 2024, the General Officer Commanding 8 Division Nigerian Army and Commander Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Brigadier General Ibikunle Ajose, addressed the troops during their deployment. Representing the Theatre Commander, Major General Oluyinka Soyele, Brigadier General Ajose tasked the soldiers with the complete neutralization of the sect. He urged them to adhere strictly to rules of engagement while safeguarding the lives and property of innocent civilians.
The commander expressed confidence in the troops, highlighting their specialized training and preparedness for the mission. He assured them that Nigerians are relying on their professionalism and determination to eliminate the Lakurawas sect and bring lasting peace to the region.
The deployment follows precursor operations conducted by 8 Division troops under Operation FANSAN YAMMA. These operations targeted sect enclaves in forests and villages across Sokoto and Kebbi, including Rumji Dutse, Sarma, Tsauna, Bauni, Magara Forest, Kaideji, and Dancha. The military destroyed 22 camps, neutralized several sect members, and recovered weapons, including four rifles, 409 rounds of PKT 7.62mm NATO ammunition, and 94 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.
The Special Operations Brigade is expected to build on these successes, further disrupt sect activities, and restore normalcy to affected communities. This deployment marks another significant step toward enhancing security and stability in the North West region.
