Bandits launched an attack on a church service in Bakinpah-Maro community, Kajuru Local Government Area, Kaduna, leaving at least three people dead and many others feared abducted.
The incident occurred on Sunday around 10 a.m. when the attackers, who arrived in large numbers, targeted both ECWA and Catholic churches.
Former Chairman of Kajuru LGA, Cafra Caino, confirmed the incident, stating that 30 people were taken, including Pastor Bernard Gajera from one of the churches.
Caino said, “The assailants attacked during the service, killing three individuals and abducting many others. The community is in shock, and we call on the authorities to act swiftly to rescue those kidnapped.”
Our correspondent reports that the attack comes after the Maro community raised funds to build a security post for law enforcement, following repeated attacks preventing farmers from reaching their farmlands.
The abduction of Pastor Gajera and others has raised concerns about a growing trend of targeting religious leaders and communities.
The attack has left the community in fear, with many calling for enhanced security measures to protect lives and property.
A local resident said, “We urge the government to take decisive action to address the security challenges in our community. We can’t continue to live in fear of bandits and kidnappers.”
Another eyewitness, who asked to remain anonymous, described the attack as terrifying.
“When the bandits arrived in large numbers, many worshippers fled,” the eyewitness said. “It was horrific. We were helpless as they wreaked havoc.”
The eyewitness called on the government to step up efforts to protect lives and property in the southern part of the state.
“We can only call on both the state and federal governments, despite their efforts, to continue trying harder for the safety of lives and property in this part of the state,” the eyewitness said.
As of the time of this report, the police are yet to comment on the attack. However, the incident has heightened concerns over escalating insecurity in the region.
Meanwhile, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Christopher Musa, on Monday, urged frontline troops nationwide to increase their efforts in defending the country.
He also urged them to maintain the highest levels of discipline and loyalty to the nation while carrying out their duties.
This was conveyed in a statement by the Director, Defence Information, Brig. Gen. Tukur Gusau.
Gusau said, “Musa urged our valiant troops to intensify their efforts in defending our motherland, while continuing to uphold the highest standards of discipline, loyalty, and integrity—hallmarks of Nigeria’s Armed Forces.”
“He also called on them to continue collaborating with other security agencies to defeat the forces of evil and restore peace and stability across the nation. Additionally, he urged all Nigerians to embrace tolerance, mutual understanding, and respect for constitutional authority.”
According to the statement, the CDS also praised members of the Armed Forces who had shown steadfast commitment and bravery in the face of the various security challenges confronting the nation.
“Specifically, the courage and valor displayed by the troops of Operation Fansan Yamma in Zamfara State, who neutralized notorious bandit leader Haliru Buzu and others. The CDS also commended the troops of Operation Hadin Kai in Maiduguri for their heroic role in rescuing thousands of people affected by the recent devastating floods in Maiduguri.”
