The Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, delivered a resounding verdict today, April 5, 2024, convicting social media sensation Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, on charges related to the mutilation of Naira notes.
The prosecution, led by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), presented a compelling case, outlining how Bobrisky, during social events, recklessly sprayed Naira notes totaling N490,000 in clear violation of the Central Bank Act of 2007.
The court proceedings revealed shocking details of Bobrisky’s actions, including instances captured on video where he lavishly sprayed Naira notes at various locations in Lagos, such as IMAX Circle Mall in Jakande, Lekki, and Aja Junction in Ikorodu.
Despite his initial plea of guilt and expressions of remorse, the defense argued for leniency, emphasizing Bobrisky’s influential social media presence and his pledge to use it for educating his followers on responsible financial behavior.
In a heartfelt plea for clemency, Bobrisky vowed to leverage his platform to advocate against Naira abuse, acknowledging his lack of awareness regarding the legal implications of his actions.
His legal team appealed for a non-custodial sentencing option, citing his cooperation with authorities and his potential to contribute positively to society.
However, the presiding judge, Justice Abimbola Awogboro, deferred sentencing until April 9, 2024, pending further review and consideration.
The judge ordered Bobrisky to be remanded in EFCC custody until the final decision is reached.
