Bobrisky, the prominent social media personality, has admitted guilt to the initial four counts related to naira abuse.
The influencer was apprehended on Wednesday evening in Lagos following allegations of mishandling naira notes.
Appearing before the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Friday, Bobrisky faced a six-count charge brought forward by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Of the six charges, four pertain to the alleged mishandling of naira notes, while the remaining two involve accusations of money laundering.
Upon hearing the charges, the self-proclaimed transgender individual pleaded guilty to the first four counts associated with naira abuse.
“Yes, I am guilty,” Bobrisky affirmed in response to the charges.
Prior to this, the EFCC’s representative, Suileman Suileman, requested that the presiding judge, Abimbola Awogboro, dismiss counts five and six, which concern the money laundering allegations.
Suileman explained that the decision to drop the money laundering charges was made during a late-night meeting on Thursday to expedite proceedings.
Subsequently, Judge Awogboro dismissed counts five and six, clearing the path for Bobrisky’s arraignment on charges related to naira abuse.
Following the plea, Bobrisky expressed to the judge that they were unaware of the legal ramifications surrounding naira abuse. They also pleaded with Awogboro for the opportunity to use their Instagram platform, boasting over five million followers, to raise awareness about the consequences of mishandling currency.
“My Lord, I implore you to grant me a second chance to utilize my platform to educate my followers about the proper handling of money. I deeply regret my actions and promise not to repeat them,” Bobrisky appealed to the judge.
In response, Judge Awogboro reminded the social media influencer that ignorance of the law does not absolve one of responsibility.
