A tragic incident unfolded in Lagos as a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver, identified as Sunday Bukola, reportedly struck and killed a five-year-old child named Malik in the Palmgroove area of Onipanu, Lagos State. The devastating accident occurred around 1:30 pm on Saturday.
According to sources, the BRT driver hit Malik, his mother, and his brother while they were attempting to cross the BRT lane. Malik tragically lost his life at the scene, while his sibling and mother sustained serious injuries.
Authorities, including the Lagos State Police Command, swiftly responded to the scene. Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the incident, stating that the driver has been apprehended and an investigation is underway.
“The deceased has been identified as Malik, aged 5, with his brother Basit, aged 2, also injured,” said a police source. “They were rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately, Malik succumbed to his injuries. Rofiat and Basit are currently receiving medical attention for their injuries.”
This tragic event echoes a similar incident reported last year, highlighting the ongoing safety concerns surrounding BRT operations in Lagos.
