Timeless Update reports the passing of Major General (Rtd) Godwin Osagie Abbe, a former Minister of Defence and Interior, as well as a former Governor of Akwa Ibom and Rivers States during his military career.
General Abbe passed away on Saturday night in Abuja after battling a prolonged illness, according to family sources.
Born on January 10, 1949, he was approaching his 76th birthday, which would have been celebrated on January 10, 2025.
His educational journey began at United Baptist School, Benin City (1953-1960), and Iguodala Secondary Modern School, Benin City (1961). He also attended Kiriji Memorial College, Igbajo, Ifelodun, in present-day Osun State, and Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. General Abbe enlisted in the Nigerian Army in July 1967 and participated in numerous military training programs, including at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, and the US Army Infantry School in Fort Benning, Georgia (1972-1973).
He joined the Nigerian Army as a Lance Corporal in 1967 and rose steadily through the ranks. By 1969, he was a Lieutenant and served as a Battalion Commander (1969-1972). He was promoted to Captain in 1971, Major in 1975, and Lieutenant Colonel in 1983. He held various positions, including Instructor at the Nigerian Defence Academy and Staff Officer at 2 Divisional Headquarters, Nigerian Army.
In 1988, he became Commander of the 2nd Mechanised Division Garrison in Ibadan and served as Military Governor of Akwa Ibom State from 1988 to 1990. His military achievements included the Forces Service Star (FSS) Medal (1985) and the prestigious Passed Staff College (PSC) qualification.
General Abbe, one of the most decorated officers of Edo descent, held significant positions, including General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division, Commander of Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), and Commander of the National Defence College.
He retired from the Nigerian Army in 1999 as a Major General. Later, he served as Minister of Interior starting July 26, 2007, and as Minister of Defence from July 14, 2009, to March 17, 2010. Additionally, he was a former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State.
Among his numerous honors were the Distinguished Service Star (DSS), Pass Staff College (PSC), and Member of the National Institute (MNI). Known for his love of squash, hunting, and masonry, General Abbe leaves behind a legacy of service and commitment.
