The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning to the government, cautioning against any form of attack on its members and protesters during the planned nationwide protest.
The NLC emphasized that any aggression towards their procession would trigger a complete shutdown of the economy, amplifying the gravity of their resolve to push for change.
The upcoming nationwide protest, slated for February 27 and 28, aims to address the profound economic challenges confronting Nigerians, following a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Nigerian Government.
Despite warnings from the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, urging the NLC to reconsider its plans, the labor union remains steadfast in its determination to proceed with the protest.
The NLC President reaffirmed that the protest would proceed as scheduled and admonished the government against disrupting the peaceful demonstrations. Allegations were made against certain groups allegedly primed by the state to incite violence during the rallies, raising concerns about potential clashes.
The NLC’s statement underscored the fundamental right to peaceful protest, condemning any attempt to suppress dissent or instigate violence against citizens exercising their democratic rights.
Furthermore, the NLC called upon international human rights bodies, as well as the African Union and the United Nations, to take note of the threats posed to peaceful protest in Nigeria.
With unwavering determination, the NLC remains resolute in its commitment to express the grievances of the Nigerian people peacefully, signaling a firm stance against economic hardships and a call for accountability from the government.
As the nation braces for the forthcoming protests on February 27 and 28, the NLC’s message echoes a resounding call for change and social justice amidst growing discontent among Nigerians.
