The Nigerian government has declared Monday, 16th September, 2024, as a public holiday to commemorate Eid-ul-Mawlid, the birth of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced this on behalf of the Federal Government on Friday, in a statement by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary.
He extended his congratulations to the Muslim Ummah at home and abroad.
Tunji-Ojo urged the Muslim community, and all Nigerians, to embrace patience, sacrifice, and resilience.
While congratulating Muslims, the Minister called on them to take this period as an opportunity to pray for lasting peace and a more prosperous, just nation.
Eid-ul-Mawlid marks the celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad, traditionally observed in Rabi’ al-Awwal, the third month of the Islamic calendar.
Muslims widely recognize the 12th day of Rabi’ al-Awwal for this commemoration, although the exact date is based on historical interpretation.
