Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde is expected to pursue the presidency in the 2027 general elections.
According to a Sahara Reporters publication, a WhatsApp group has been created to promote the governor’s possible presidential campaign in 2027.
The group, which currently has 467 members, includes notable figures such as Olajide Odidiomo, a member of the House of Representatives representing Ibadan Northwest/Southwest.
Notably, several of Governor Makinde’s aides are also part of the group, including his political assistant, Akeem Azeez, Sahara Reporters has learned.
In addition, officials from local government councils are also active in the WhatsApp group.
The group’s members have expressed their support for Seyi Makinde’s potential presidential run, citing his “people-centered” governance and leadership style as reasons why they believe he is the most qualified candidate for the office.
Makinde, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a second-term governor, has not officially declared his presidential aspirations.
However, the participation of his aides and a House of Representatives member in the WhatsApp group promoting his candidacy is significant.
Seyi Makinde, a former member of the G5 governors, had supported the emergence of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as president in the 2023 election over his party’s candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
Recently, he has been at odds with the Tinubu-led administration over local government issues, disagreeing with the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government autonomy and arguing that it might not reflect the true situation on the ground.
This situation led to Oyo State’s local government chairpersons withdrawing from the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government autonomy.
