Chelsea management reportedly considered two candidates to replace Mauricio Pochettino earlier this season. While his dismissal is not certain, Tuesday’s dismal 5-0 loss to Arsenal may push co-owner Todd Boehly to consider new leadership.
Chelsea fans had hoped Pochettino’s appointment would mark a turnaround after a turbulent first year under Boehly and Clearlake Capital, which saw the departure of Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, and Frank Lampard.
However, Chelsea’s fortunes have only marginally improved, and they remain one of the most inconsistent teams in the Premier League. This week’s crushing defeat at the Emirates Stadium underlined their current struggles.
Pochettino is expected to meet with Chelsea’s hierarchy for a post-season debrief to discuss the club’s direction. Despite significant transfer spending, the team’s on-field performance has not improved significantly.
Ruben Amorim is attracting interest from several top European clubs.
If Pochettino is dismissed, Chelsea is reportedly considering Ruben Amorim and Roberto De Zerbi as potential replacements. According to The Guardian, these two managers are on Chelsea’s shortlist.
Sporting CP’s Amorim is in high demand across Europe, with recent talks in London hinting at potential moves to other Premier League clubs.
However, his chances of joining West Ham or Liverpool are dwindling. Bayern Munich and Barcelona are also in the market for new managers, potentially creating competition for Chelsea if they pursue Amorim.
Brighton manager De Zerbi has also been linked to top jobs, including Liverpool’s, as Jurgen Klopp prepares for his departure. However, Liverpool seems to be focusing on Feyenoord’s Arne Slot, leaving De Zerbi as a prime target for other clubs.
De Zerbi’s success in transforming Brighton with an exciting style of play and a focus on developing young talent has increased his value since his arrival in 2022.
Chelsea’s squad is predominantly composed of young players, which Pochettino cites as one of the reasons behind the team’s inconsistency.
