The Federal High Court in Lagos adjourned the case against celebrity bartender and businessman, Pascal Okechukwu, known as Cubana Chief Priest, till June 25. The court granted this at the defendant’s request, who was absent but had written a letter seeking the adjournment.
Productive Settlement Talks
The law firm of Classicus & Dewlight, representing Cubana Chief Priest, wrote a letter dated June 4, 2024. They reminded the court that parties had agreed to explore an out-of-court settlement. The lawyers noted that discussions have been productive and are nearing conclusion.
The letter stated, “In the spirit of settlement, we reached a consensus with the prosecution to further engage in negotiations. Hence, we request Your Lordship to vacate the matter for June 5, 2024, to enable parties to conclude the alternative settlement and oblige us with a further date for a report of settlement and possibly; conclusion of proceedings in limine.”
They requested an adjournment till June 25, 26, 27, or 28 for a report of settlement. With no objections from the prosecution, the court agreed to adjourn till June 25.
Initial Charges and Bail
On April 17, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Okechukwu. The charges included allegedly spraying and tampering with Naira notes during a social event at Eko Hotel in Lagos. Okechukwu pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N10 million.
Out-of-Court Settlement Discussions
The defendant was accused of tampering with N500 notes while dancing at Eko Hotel. This act contravenes section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act of 2007. On May 2, the defence counsel, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chikaosolu Ojukwu, informed the court of ongoing out-of-court settlement talks. He applied for a withdrawal of the defence’s preliminary objection to facilitate reconciliation.
EFCC prosecutor, Bilikisu Buhari, confirmed the defence counsel’s statement and noted that the Commission was still considering the application.
