Court Invalidates Kano Emirate Law; Sanctions on HRM Sanusi

A Federal High Court in Kano has invalidated the Kano Emirate Council Law used to reinstate Sanusi as the 16th Kano Emir.

The court also nullified the law that dethroned Ado Bayero and other emirs in the state.

In his ruling on Thursday, June 20, Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman dismissed the Kano State Government’s actions, ordering parties to maintain the status quo.

The court further criticized all measures taken by the Kano state government to repeal the Kano Emirates Council Law.

Recall that the Kano House of Assembly had repealed the law, subsequently leading Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to depose Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as Emir of Kano.

The governor also reversed the establishment of four emirates — Bichi, Rano, Karaye, and Gaya — initiated by his predecessor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

The law was used to reinstate Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 14th Emir of Kano, who was deposed by Ganduje in 2020, as the 16th Emir of Kano.

However, a kingmaker in the former Kano emirate, Aminu Babba Danagundi, the Sarkin Dawaki Babba, challenged the law and petitioned the court, represented by counsel Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN), to declare it null and void.
