The Nigerian Customs Service, under the leadership of Comptroller General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has intercepted a staggering 120 trucks attempting to smuggle food items out of Nigeria.
Addressing a sectoral debate organized by the House of Representatives, Comptroller General Adeniyi disclosed that President Tinubu has directed the seized trucks to be redirected to local markets in the areas of interception. This measure aims to stabilize prices of grains and other food items within Nigeria.
Expressing concern over the complicity of border communities in smuggling activities, Adeniyi emphasized that the crackdown on food smuggling is essential to combat hunger and deter those seeking to profit at the expense of the populace.
Cautioning against quick-fix solutions, Adeniyi stressed the importance of implementing long-term strategies to tackle food scarcity effectively. He highlighted the Customs’ role in ensuring food security, noting that many agricultural inputs currently enjoy zero duty and zero VAT.
