Dangote Refinery to Boost Nigeria’s Economy and End Fuel Shortages, Says Governor Abiodun

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, stated that the start of fuel production at the Dangote refinery will strengthen Nigeria’s economy by ending persistent shortages and saving foreign exchange.

Petrol from the Dangote refinery, which has a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, is expected to reach filling stations within the next 48 hours as agreements with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited have been finalized.

In a statement on Tuesday, signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Lekan Adeniran, Governor Abiodun noted that the refinery’s launch will resolve one of Nigeria’s long-standing issues—its dependence on fuel imports.

The statement also mentioned that with the Warri and Port Harcourt refineries gearing up to start production, Nigerians can expect relief from frequent fuel shortages, and the economy will be bolstered.

Governor Abiodun commended Aliko Dangote for his commitment to completing the multi-billion-dollar project despite numerous challenges.

He also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for ensuring that the refinery begins operations during his administration and for his dedication to revitalizing other refineries in the country, which he said would significantly reduce fuel costs once they are all operational.

He remarked, “This major achievement is a turning point not just for you as a businessman but also for Nigeria and Africa as a whole. The creation of this refinery marks a significant change in the region’s energy sector, demonstrating the impact of vision, resilience, and a strong commitment to economic growth.

“The Dangote refinery is set to revolutionize petrol production, addressing one of Nigeria’s most pressing issues: its dependence on imported fuel. This reliance has drained our foreign exchange reserves and hindered our potential for self-reliance.

“Producing petrol domestically will greatly reduce the outflow of foreign currency, thereby strengthening our economy. This step aligns well with President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s goal to diversify the economy and lessen dependency on oil exports.

“The economic benefits of the refinery go beyond just fuel production. It is expected to create thousands of jobs, both directly and indirectly, thereby helping to lower unemployment rates. The resulting increase in employment will boost local economies, stimulate growth in related industries, and improve the living standards of many families across Nigeria.

“Besides boosting local jobs and economic activity, the refinery is expected to enhance Nigeria’s energy security. With its capacity to produce a significant amount of petrol, the country will be better positioned to meet its energy needs, reducing the volatility linked to fuel shortages and price swings.

“This stability will foster a more conducive environment for businesses and attract foreign investments, further enhancing economic growth.”
