Ogun State Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, during her Fidau prayers.
Describing Onanuga as “a dear friend and sister in the struggle for a more inclusive and equitable society,” Salako-Oyedele highlighted her contributions beyond legislation, portraying her as “a force of nature, a mentor to many, and a tireless champion for women’s empowerment.”
Acknowledging that Onanuga was often misunderstood due to her moniker, “Ijaya,” the deputy governor emphasized her strength of character, saying: “She was a woman of substance, fierce in her convictions, compassionate in her engagements, and unyielding in her pursuit of fairness.”
Reflecting on Onanuga’s impact, she noted that her legacy would endure through the many women she mentored, the policies she influenced, and the numerous lives she touched. “She showed us that leadership is not about self but about service,” she said.
Salako-Oyedele recalled Onanuga’s vibrant personality, stating, “There was never a dull moment with Ijaya. You knew when she was around, greeting people, hugging people, and when she wanted to disarm everyone, she would switch from her Queen’s English to the Remo dialect. She was fierce and outspoken but she was fun.”
She also spoke about Onanuga’s dedication to her family, describing her as “a wonderful and protective mother” who always considered her children in major life decisions. Sharing a personal moment, she recounted, “When she became a grandma in faraway Japan, I was one of the first people she shared her news with. I jokingly called her grandma ‘san’.”
In recognition of Onanuga’s influence, Salako-Oyedele revealed that, despite her federal legislative role, she extended her impact to Ogun State. “In her role as Deputy Chief Whip, she was considerate of me and included a road in faraway Ota amongst her projects. It is just nearing completion. I remain grateful,” she added.
Concluding her tribute, the deputy governor prayed for divine mercy, saying, “May Almighty Allah, in His infinite mercy, accept her good deeds, overlook her shortcomings, grant her Al Jannah Firdaus, and give her loved ones the strength to bear her irreparable loss. Amin.”
