Government is meant to serve the people, with each administration respecting and building upon its predecessor’s efforts. Yet, when leaders act like emperors, ignoring previous commitments out of personal disdain, the consequences can be disastrous.

Take the case in Ogun State, where Governor Gbenga Daniel struck a deal in 2007 with a Chinese firm to develop a Free Trade Zone (FTZ). But his successor, Ibikunle Amosun, abruptly canceled the deal in 2015, ignoring the legal fallout.

This reckless decision has led to a protracted legal battle, resulting in the seizure of three Nigerian-owned assets, including the presidential jet, by a UK court. Now, the Chinese firm is demanding $75 million in damages, a burden that ultimately falls on the Nigerian people.

What’s more infuriating is that these former governors continue to live without facing any consequences, while Nigerians, including President Tinubu and Governor Dapo Abiodun, are left to deal with the fallout.

The situation escalated to the point where, in September 2023, Governor Abiodun and the Attorney General of the Federation tried to negotiate with the Chinese firm, only for talks to end in deadlock.

This debacle underscores a broader issue: when leaders prioritize personal vendettas over the public good, it’s the citizens who pay the price. Both ex-governors should be held accountable for their actions, with a $35 million fine each.

The people of Ogun State and Nigeria at large should not bear the financial burden of their reckless, ego-driven decisions. Instead of living comfortably, these former leaders should be made to pay for the costly mistakes they’ve made—mistakes that have left Nigeria’s reputation and assets hanging in the balance.
