Gov. Abiodun Announces New Funding Initiative to Enhance Primary Health Centers’ Performance

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, revealed on Tuesday that his administration will soon commence the distribution of grants and resources to the 236 Primary Health Centres (PHCs) statewide. This initiative aims to align the facilities with the standards set by the World Health Organization.

Governor Abiodun made this announcement during a visit from the executive members of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), who were in the state for their 44th annual general meeting and Scientific Conference.

He stated, “We have secured grants and resources from multilateral organizations that we will soon begin to allocate, which will enable us to establish at least 236 primary health care centers that comply with the World Health Organization’s standards.”

Furthermore, Prince Abiodun emphasized that his administration will continue to invest not only in primary health care facilities but also in secondary and tertiary health institutions, as well as in the training of medical professionals and human capital development.

He noted that nearly one hundred primary health care centres have been renovated, incorporating solar energy, digital communication tools, and systems for electronic patient record management.

While confirming that his administration has consistently provided hazard allowances for doctors in the state, Governor Abiodun also mentioned the approval of payments for clinical duty allowances and other entitlements.

The governor encouraged the association to maintain their gatherings to share knowledge and experiences that could enhance the health sector.

“I urge you to keep convening to exchange ideas and discuss strategies for improving healthcare delivery. Once you draft your resolutions, please forward them to us so we can provide the necessary support,” he stated.

Additionally, he noted the successful implementation of a health insurance scheme that has positively impacted the organized private sector and civil service.

Earlier, the outgoing National President of NARD, Dr. Dele Abdulahi, pointed out the significant challenge of physician migration, both internationally and between states. He thanked Governor Abiodun for his notable achievements in the health sector and requested assistance to mitigate inter-state migration through the introduction of car and housing loans.

“One of the pressing issues affecting our association is the migration of doctors. Notably, the concern is not just emigration but also inter-state movement, which has become a major challenge as many seek opportunities in other states,” he remarked.
