Governor Abiodun Showcases Impressive Forestry Achievements

As part of his ongoing commitment to sustainable forest management in Ogun State, Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun has achieved significant milestones through the State’s Ministry of Forestry.

Under Governor Abiodun’s leadership, the Ministry has successfully maintained nine forest reserves, signed tree-planting agreements, and expanded forest cover with investor-friendly policies.

These actions align with his ISEYA agenda and establish a strong foundation for future forestry initiatives.

The Ministry, led by Commissioner Engr. Taiwo Oludotun, FNSE, has made sure the progress continues seamlessly.

Some key achievements as of October 2024 include the establishment of indigenous plantations, forest expansion, annual tree planting, land concession for pulp wood production, and the procurement of essential operational tools. The Ministry has also focused on securing forest resources, collaborating with corporate bodies, and generating significant revenue.

Below are some of the accomplishments as of October 2024:

i. Maintenance of the State’s nine forest reserves: Ensuring Ogun State remains a key player among timber-producing states in Nigeria.

ii. Tree Planting Agreements: The Ministry signed a 500ha tree planting agreement with Nigerian Breweries in the Olokemeji Forest Reserve, with 150ha already planted. A similar agreement was signed with the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) for the establishment of 300ha of indigenous trees.

iii. Forest Expansion: Over 2,000 hectares of forest land with approximately 3,000,000 trees have been established through direct planting and partnerships.

iv. Annual Planting Totals:

2021: 521,837 trees on 469.7 hectares

2022: 360,409 trees on 324.4 hectares

2023: 1,565,399 trees on 1,409 hectares

2024: 510,838 trees on 459.8 hectares

v. Wildlife Sanctuary: A 4,000ha Wildlife Sanctuary was approved and gazetted at Itasin, Ijebu East, for the conservation of elephants.

vi. Bamboo Plantation: 5 hectares of bamboo plantation were established in Ilaro Forest Reserve.

The Ministry has also made great strides in improving security, reducing encroachment, partnering with corporate bodies for agro-forestry, and ensuring sustainable use of forest resources. The Ministry has so far achieved 95% of its 2024 revenue target.

These impressive accomplishments are a testament to the Governor’s dedication to sustainable forestry and environmental stewardship in Ogun State.
