The Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, has expressed the lawmakers’ determination to support President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform bills despite opposition from state governors.
Agbese revealed that some governors have threatened to deny lawmakers from their states return tickets for the 2027 elections if they endorse the tax reforms.
However, he asserted that the lawmakers remain unfazed, emphasizing their duty to represent the interests of their constituents rather than yielding to pressure from governors.
Explaining the lawmakers’ stance, Agbese noted their belief that the reforms are in the public’s best interest.
Timeless Update recalls that President Tinubu, in September, submitted four executive bills on tax reforms to the National Assembly. These bills have faced resistance from the governors, who, through the National Economic Council (NEC), requested their withdrawal for further deliberation and input.
President Tinubu, however, declined to withdraw the bills, stating that amendments could still be made while the proposals remain with the legislature.
The reforms, based on recommendations from the Presidential Committee on Fiscal and Tax Reforms chaired by Taiwo Oyedele, include:
1. The Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, to provide a fiscal framework for taxation in the country.
2. The Tax Administration Bill, aimed at creating a clear legal structure for all taxes and reducing disputes.
3. The Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, which will replace the Federal Inland Revenue Service Act and establish the Nigeria Revenue Service.
4. The Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill, to create a tax tribunal and tax ombudsman.
Despite the governors’ opposition, Agbese affirmed the lawmakers’ readiness to support Tinubu’s vision for economic reform.
He stated, “As members of the House of Representatives, we are committed to supporting President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to reboot the economy for the good of the country.
“We are united across party lines to ensure progress. This reflects the leadership of Speaker Tajudeen Abass.”
He further revealed, “Some governors are threatening lawmakers from their states, even going as far as saying they would deny them return tickets in 2027 if they support the bills.”
Drawing from scripture, Agbese quoted Isaiah 54:15, saying, “Behold, they shall surely gather, but not by me. Whosoever shall gather together against thee shall fall for thy sake.”
He stressed that lawmakers in the 10th Assembly remain loyal to their constituents.
