The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a directive prohibiting the use of Point of Sale (POS) machines and other electronic mobile money transaction devices within police stations and facilities across Nigeria.
The announcement was made by Police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi, citing public outcry over purported corrupt practices involving POS machine operators and certain police operatives.
Adejobi stressed that the ban is aimed at preserving the integrity and security of police operations, curbing corruption, and upholding discipline within the Force.
The directive applies to all police officers, with severe sanctions awaiting any attempt to flout it, including the leadership of affected commands and formations.
Despite previous directives, some Commands and Formations were found to be disregarding the regulation.
The IGP highlighted the risks associated with the use of electronic payment devices within police facilities, including potential compromises of sensitive information and financial irregularities.
Strict adherence to the directive is emphasized, with non-compliance deemed non-negotiable. Any police officer or POS operator found contravening the order or engaging in illicit financial transactions will face disciplinary and criminal action in accordance with existing laws and regulations.
Command/Formation leadership will also be held responsible for any violations.
This move underscores the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to maintaining transparency, accountability, and discipline while addressing concerns about the potential misuse of financial technology within law enforcement agencies.
