In a bid to address environmental concerns and ensure safety along the Lagos coastal road in Mayegun, Lekki area, the Lagos State Government has issued a four-day relocation notice to squatters occupying illegal shanties.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the directive after an inspection tour of various areas, accompanied by government officials and security personnel.
Wahab emphasized the need for squatters close to Regional Road Alignment to vacate the area by Thursday afternoon, with enforcement set to commence early Friday morning.
The inspection tour aimed to secure the coastal alignment and remove illegal settlements along the corridors. The government plans to clear the areas next week, with the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LABSCA) involved in regeneration efforts.
The Commissioner highlighted previous clean-up exercises in notorious sites harboring criminals, stressing the importance of sustained efforts to prevent squatters from returning to rebuild shanties.
Enforcement will commence this week to open drainage channels, addressing flooding issues caused by illegal construction on canal paths.
Stakeholder meetings have been held with property owners and affected residents, but commitment from the community members remains lacking.
Special Adviser on Environment, Kunle Rotimi-Akodu, urged remaining squatters to relocate before enforcement begins, affirming Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to restoring greenery and beautifying Lagos.
