The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has appointed a new President: Anthony Ewa. He took office in an acting capacity on (Yesterday) Monday, October 14, 2024.
Ewa steps into this role less than a month after Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, declared himself the “Designated President” of the NURTW.
He becomes the second individual to hold this position since MC Oluomo resigned as Chairman of the Lagos State chapter in February 2024, purportedly as part of a “claimed deal” to assume the national leadership role.
MC Oluomo’s aspirations faced legal challenges and protests led by the Joe Ajaero-led Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), which supported the continuation of the embattled President Ibikunle Baruwa in office.
To address the leadership vacuum, the Board of Trustees, chaired by Usman Najeem Yasin, appointed Aliyu Isa Ore as acting President until a permanent leader could be chosen.
This situation increased confidence within MC Oluomo’s camp, bolstering his belief that he would soon achieve his goal. His self-proclamation as the “Designated President” fueled this sentiment.
However, in a surprising turn, Ewa has now been appointed as the new President. He officially introduced himself to the staff and all departments at the national headquarters in Abuja on October 14, 2024.
In a statement from the transport union, Ewa expressed that “his immediate focus will be on fostering unity, which is essential for coming together as one, transcending our differences to promote collaboration and mutual respect, as our strength lies in our unity.”
