The Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, represented Governor Dapo Abiodun at the grand finale and award night of the 2024 Press Week organized by the Ogun State Chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ).
In her address, the Deputy Governor emphasized the indispensable role of journalism in a democratic society, describing it as the “Fourth Estate” and a crucial bridge between the government and the public. She noted that journalism ensures the flow of accurate information while holding those in power accountable.
“This immense responsibility requires journalists to maintain objectivity, embrace investigative journalism, and resist the influence of those who may seek to manipulate the power of the press for selfish gains,” she stated.
Salako-Oyedele highlighted the importance of agriculture to Ogun State’s economy, describing it as the backbone that sustains millions of livelihoods and significantly contributes to the state’s GDP. She acknowledged that the theme of the press week, “Unlocking the Potential of Agriculture for Economic Development: The Role of the Media,” was both apt and timely.
She further underscored the critical role of the media in driving the development of the agricultural sector. “The media plays a pivotal role in unlocking the immense potential of agriculture as journalists have the power to educate, inform, and inspire action. By reporting on innovative farming practices, successful agricultural initiatives, and rural investment opportunities, the media can amplify the sector’s importance and mobilize support for its development,” she said.
The Deputy Governor called on journalists to highlight the efforts of farmers, sustainable farming methods, and pressing issues such as climate change and technological innovations in their reportage.
She concluded by congratulating the award recipients for their exceptional contributions to journalism and society at large. “I congratulate all awardees who were honored tonight for their exemplary contributions to journalism and the society at large,” Salako-Oyedele added.
The event marked the culmination of a week dedicated to celebrating the press and fostering discussions on the media’s role in advancing societal development, particularly through agriculture.
