The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) is deeply troubled by the concerning reports of unauthorized mining activities occurring within the vicinity of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife.
As the foremost representative body of Nigerian students nationwide, we stand in solidarity with our colleagues and members of the university community affected by these unauthorized operations.
Recent revelations regarding unauthorized mining activities near the university’s staff quarters and critical water sources pose a significant risk to the safety, health, and welfare of thousands of students, faculty, and staff.
The encroachment of mining activities onto the university campus disrupts the academic environment and undermines the pursuit of knowledge and enlightenment that universities aim to foster.
We strongly denounce the blatant disregard for environmental regulations and the potential involvement of certain individuals or groups in facilitating these unauthorized mining operations.
The recent tragedy in Bodija, Ibadan, resulting in loss of life, injuries, and extensive property damage, serves as a poignant reminder of the hazards posed by such activities.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the families of the victims and urge prompt and thorough investigations into the incident to ensure justice prevails.
The situation at OAU requires immediate attention and decisive action from all relevant stakeholders. We call upon the university administration to prioritize the safety and well-being of the campus community by taking prompt measures to halt these unauthorized activities and hold those responsible accountable.
Additionally, we urge the Federal Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Solid Minerals, and other concerned agencies to initiate a comprehensive inquiry into the matter and ensure perpetrators face legal consequences.
Furthermore, we appeal to international organizations to provide support and expertise in addressing this urgent issue, which not only jeopardizes the local community but also has broader implications for environmental sustainability and public health.
It is imperative that we collaborate to protect our universities as centers of learning and progress, free from the negative impact of unauthorized mining and other detrimental activities.
NANS National remains steadfast in advocating for the rights and well-being of Nigerian students and will closely monitor the situation at OAU. We urge all stakeholders to unite in safeguarding our educational institutions and preserving the future of our nation.
