The communications commission has directed all network operators to finalise the verification and linkage of SIMs to NINs by September 14, 2024.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has set September 14 as the “final date” for linking the National Identification Number (NIN) with the Subscriber Identification Module (SIM).
NCC spokesperson, Reuben Muoka, revealed this in a statement on Wednesday, ordering all mobile network operators (MNOs) to finish the verification and linkage of SIMs to NINs by September 14, 2024.
Muoka noted that over 153 million SIMs have already been linked to their NINs, “showing a notable compliance rate of 96 per cent, a significant rise from 69.7 per cent in January 2024.”
“To ensure full compliance with the NIN-SIM linkage directive, the NCC has mandated all Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to complete the required verification and linkage of SIMs to NINs by September 14, 2024,” the statement added.
“Starting September 15, 2024, the Commission mandates that all SIMs in Nigeria must be linked to a valid NIN.”
The commission stated that in partnership with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), the NCC has identified concerning cases.
The NCC reaffirmed its commitment to collaborate with security agencies and other partners to eliminate the sale of pre-registered SIMs, aiming to protect national security and uphold the integrity of mobile numbers in Nigeria.
The commission emphasized that effective from September 15, 2024, every SIM card in Nigeria must have a valid NIN linked to it.
“We encourage all citizens who have not yet completed their NIN-SIM linkage or who have experienced issues due to verification errors to contact their service providers promptly to update their information before the deadline.
“Alternatively, authorised self-service portals are available for this process. The NCC also reminds the public that selling and purchasing pre-registered SIMs is illegal and carries penalties of imprisonment and fines.
“We urge the public to report any such activities to the Commission via our toll-free number (622) or through our social media channels,” it stated.
