The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development in Ogun State, Hon. Motunrayo Adijat Adeleye, emphasized that Nigerian girls have overcome numerous challenges to achieve success in various fields.
Adeleye acknowledged that issues such as gender inequality, restricted educational opportunities, the persistent threat of early child marriage, and societal stereotypes continue to pose significant barriers.
Her remarks came during an event held in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, organized by her ministry in collaboration with the First Lady’s office and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), celebrating this year’s International Day of the Girl Child.
The occasion included a competition featuring participants from eleven schools, with various winners receiving cash prizes and other rewards.
In her address, Adeleye, a former member of the State House of Assembly, stated, “From excelling academically to making significant contributions in science, arts, sports, and more, girls are showcasing their boundless potential.
“Yet, while we celebrate their remarkable accomplishments, we must recognize that the struggle is ongoing—millions of girls continue to face violence, inequality, and barriers to quality education. Today, we gather to envision a new future for our girls—one that is bold, inclusive, and filled with opportunity.”
The Commissioner noted that the state government has continually provided strong support for girls in Ogun through empowerment initiatives, awareness campaigns, and encouraging them to voice concerns about Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
She highlighted that the government is training 1,000 girls in technical and vocational skills to help close the growing gender gap.
The First Lady, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun, added, “My vision for the girls of Ogun State is for them to grow up in an environment where their voices are valued, and their potential is realized. This vision aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 3, which aims to ensure healthy lives and well-being for all, and SDG 8, which advocates for decent work and economic growth.”
