Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called on the Nigerian government to seek assistance from Zimbabwe in addressing the current record-high inflation in the country.
Speaking at a youth leadership symposium held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Obasanjo emphasized the need for Nigeria to learn from Zimbabwe’s experience, as the southern African nation recently tackled a similar inflation crisis.
Nigeria’s inflation rate has surged to 29.9 percent, leading to widespread protests due to the soaring cost of living and skyrocketing prices of essential commodities.
During the symposium themed “Opportunities for Peace: Roles of the Youths in Conflict Prevention in Africa,” Obasanjo stressed the importance of confronting challenges head-on and seeking guidance from those who have successfully navigated similar issues in the past.
Highlighting the importance of dialogue in resolving conflicts, Obasanjo emphasized the role of youths in promoting peace and security on the African continent.
He urged the government to prioritize peace-building efforts and cultivate a culture of love and forgiveness among the youth to prevent violence and foster stability.
The symposium, organized by the Centre for Human Security and Dialogue in collaboration with the Institute for African Culture and International Understanding, aimed to empower African youths as agents of positive change and promote a more peaceful society.
As Nigeria grapples with economic challenges exacerbated by high inflation rates, Obasanjo’s call to seek Zimbabwe’s assistance underscores the urgency of finding solutions to mitigate the impact of inflation on the country’s economy and citizens’ livelihoods.
