The Ogun State government has closed three churches for violating state noise pollution regulations and for their repeated non-compliance with government directives.
The affected churches are Salvation Ministries on Kuforiji Olubi Drive, Adigbe GRA, Abeokuta; Ambassador of Truth Assembly International on Olorunseye Avenue, Ijeun Titun; and Christ Apostolic Church, Fountain of Faith District Headquarters, Gbogunmi, Itedo Alafia Community, Bode Olude.
Farook Akintunde, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Environmental Compliance and Enforcement, said that the closures followed multiple warnings and failed attempts to resolve the noise pollution issues through discussions with the churches’ leadership.
According to Akintunde, the Christ Apostolic Church in Gbogunmi frequently held loud night vigils with speakers positioned outside, disturbing the peace of the surrounding neighborhood.
“The community not only complained but also wrote a strong petition against the church, stating that the noise pollution was impacting the health of its members,” Akintunde said.
“Despite several attempts to engage with the presiding pastor and church elders, they did not address the issue. No responsible government would allow such disturbances to harm the health and well-being of its residents,” Akintunde added.
He warned against obstructing government officials from carrying out their duties and urged other religious centers to avoid creating noise pollution. Akintunde also stated that any religious center found guilty of noise pollution would face similar closures across the state.
