Ogun Lawmakers Urge Governor to Appoint New Commander for Amotekun

The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging the State Government to revamp the State Security Network Agency, also known as the Amotekun Corps. The resolution aims to enhance the safety and security of residents across the state.

One of the key recommendations is the appointment of a new State Commander for the Amotekun Corps. It is specified that the appointed commander should hold a rank not below that of a Major or its equivalent in other Security Agencies.

This call for repositioning follows the unfortunate passing of the former Commander, David Akinremi, in June 2023. Akinremi, a retired Commissioner of Police, was initially appointed to lead the Amotekun Corps in 2021 by Governor Dapo Abiodun. His death has underscored the need for a capable successor to oversee the operations of the Agency.

Members of the Assembly highlighted various challenges facing the Amotekun Corps during the plenary session presided over by Speaker Oludaisi Elemide. Hon. Babatunde Tella, the sponsor of the resolution, emphasized the Corps’ inefficiency following the demise of Commander Akinremi.

He cited reports indicating insufficient funding and a shortage of personnel as major impediments to the Corps’ effectiveness.

Furthermore, there were discussions about the escalating security breaches, particularly incidents of kidnappings and armed robberies, in different parts of the state. Several members, including Honourables Olusegun Kaka, Adebisi Oyedele, Minority Leader Lukman Adeleye, Adegoke Adeyanju, and Fola Salami, shared accounts of insecurity within their respective constituencies.

In response to these concerns, the resolution also emphasized the urgent need to equip the Amotekun Corps with modern ammunition, up-to-date communication gadgets, and other essential security apparatus.

Additionally, there was a call for the procurement of additional vehicles to facilitate the Corps’ operations and other related activities.

The motion for the resolution was moved by Majority Leader Yusuf Sheriff, seconded by Minority Leader Adeleye Lukman, and received unanimous support from the entire Assembly through a voice vote.
