Ogun State Inaugurates 5th Children’s Parliament, Promises to Safeguard Child Rights

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has launched the fifth Children’s Parliament, pledging that his administration would forge connections with relevant stakeholders to advance, sustain and safeguard child rights.

Governor Abiodun, who made the pledge during the inauguration at the Obas’ Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, stated that the Parliament would serve as a platform for children to express their ideas and contribute meaningfully to society.

Abiodun, represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon Adijat Adeleye, also emphasized that the platform signifies a dedication to nurturing future leaders who will play significant roles in shaping the state and the nation.

“The inauguration aligns with the participatory rights of the child as outlined in the Child Right Act Law 2003 and Ogun State Children’s Law 2006, which give them a sense of belonging and recognition, as well as the opportunity to voice their opinion and contribute to matters that concern them,” he said.

Addressing the Parliamentarians, the Head of Service (HoS), Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, urged them to leverage every available opportunity to lobby and advise the government on policies in a responsible manner, with the aim of securing a better future as future leaders.

He also encouraged them to be exemplary ambassadors, demonstrating responsible behavior in their schools and homes to set a positive example for other children in the state.

In his remarks, Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Segun Fagbayi, described the platform as a learning and service opportunity, urging the Parliamentarians to represent their local governments well and serve as role models.

Chief (Mrs.) Ayotunde Lawal, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Women Affairs and Social Development, highlighted the menace of child trafficking in society and stressed the need for child protection, calling on parents and stakeholders to unite against child abuse.

Lawal reiterated the state government’s commitment to restoring children’s confidence through substantial investments in the Social Protection Sector.

Speaking on behalf of the Parliament, Speaker Ezekiel Favour, representing Ifo local government area, expressed confidence that the resolutions passed at the Plenary would be presented to the governor and implemented to reinforce Child Rights Law.
