The Ogun State Government has initiated renovation and reconstruction activities at the MKO Abiola International Stadium and the Alake Sports Centre in Ijeja, Abeokuta, in preparation for the upcoming National Sports Festival (NSF), themed “2024 Gateway Games.”
Following an inspection of the two venues, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka, the Commissioner for Sports Development, expressed confidence that the renovation will be completed on schedule and will undergo testing before the festival.
Currently, workers are scraping the pitch at the stadium’s main bowl, removing the tartan tracks, and repairing the roofs of the indoor hall at Alake Sports Centre simultaneously, as the commissioner guided journalists through the sites.
He announced plans to expand the VIP section of the stadium and construct an Olympic-sized swimming pool, along with tennis and handball courts within the complex.
The commissioner emphasized that the current administration is committed to advancing sports and youth development initiatives in the state, focusing on identifying and nurturing emerging talents.
He underlined the importance of utilizing the youth’s potential and redirecting their energy toward productive pursuits that benefit their personal growth and the state’s socio-economic progress. He reiterated the government’s dedication to hosting a world-class National Sports Festival.
Hon. Isiaka noted that the festival will gather the state’s top athletes, inspiring future generations, showcasing the rich cultural heritage, and promising to honor exceptional performances.
He mentioned that the extensive renovations aim to enhance the skills and dedication of local athletes leading up to, during, and after the games while highlighting the state government’s commitment and readiness to host the National Sports Festival.
He urged corporate organizations and community-minded individuals to collaborate with the government to ensure the NSF’s success.
The Commissioner pointed out that the Sports Festival is an opportunity for the state to shine, demonstrating its wealth of talent, potential, and genuine hospitality.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to hosting an impressive festival, assuring that the facilities would meet high standards and attract both national and international events.
The National Sports Festival is scheduled to take place from January 12 to January 26, 2025.
