The Ogun State government has issued a 100-day notice to traders at Kara Market in Isheri, requiring them to move to the Ogere International Market along the Lagos – Ibadan Expressway.
Sam Oyeleye, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, stated that the relocation is necessary to restore order and hygiene due to the environmental issues plaguing the market, which is located near the Lagos State border.
The deadline, set for December 31, is intended to allow traders a gradual exit. After this period, all stalls, shanties, and temporary structures will be dismantled.
Oyeleye highlighted that the state government is frequently bombarded with reports of improper waste disposal and open defecation in the area, despite the availability of public restrooms.
He said, “The state government will not stand by and allow a few traders to mar the environment and risk public health by spreading communicable diseases through open defecation, which persists despite repeated awareness campaigns, warnings, and arrests.
“This unsightly behavior is also inconsistent with the state’s policy of attracting investors as an industrial hub, necessitating the market’s relocation for the overall benefit of the state.”
Oyeleye added that the market has exceeded its capacity and no longer fits its current location, lacking room for expansion or effective management.
He assured the cattle sellers and other traders of sufficient security and a warm reception from the host community, noting that the relocation would occur in phases.
