The Ogun State Youth Leaders’ Forum has expressed outrage over the arrest of Comrade Babatunde Aremu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) State Youth Leader in Ijebu Ode.
In a press release signed by Hon. Sabur Adefolu, Assistant State Youth Leader, and Comrade Timothy Odedina, the Public Relations Officer of the Forum, the group described Aremu’s arrest as a violation of human rights, demanding his immediate and unconditional release.
According to the press release, the Forum condemned the arrest as a “Gestapo-style” operation carried out by unidentified individuals. “The Forum expresses outrage and disappointment at the manner of Aremu’s arrest by unidentified individuals, which undermines human rights and the rule of law,” the release stated. The Youth Leaders’ Forum called on the Department of State Services (DSS) to either press charges or release Aremu within 24 hours, emphasizing the need for transparency in the circumstances surrounding his arrest.
The Forum further claimed that the incident reflects broader issues of systemic oppression faced by youths in Ogun State, citing events from 2019 at MKO Stadium as a reminder of such challenges.
They also alleged that agents of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), pretending to be APC members, are responsible for perpetuating violence and intimidation in the state.
The Forum expressed solidarity with Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, hailing him as “a champion of youth empowerment and development,” while insisting that Aremu’s arrest is an attack on the peace and stability fostered by the governor.
The press release concluded with specific demands:
1. The immediate release of Comrade Babatunde Aremu
2. Full transparency on the reasons for his arrest
3. Respect for human rights and the rule of law
4. An end to the oppression of Ogun State youths
As the 24-hour ultimatum nears, all eyes are on the DSS and other relevant authorities to respond to these demands.
