Hon. Olamide Lawal, an environmentalist, Special Assistant to the Governor of Ogun State on Youth Affairs, and the National President of the APC Youth League, took center stage at the World Environment Day celebration organized by the Ogun State Ministry of Environment. Themed “Achieving the Smart City Agenda through Climate Change Resilience and Urban Afforestation,” the event highlighted critical environmental issues and the role of youth in addressing them.
As one of the panelists, Hon. Lawal underscored the significant contributions of young people in climate change advocacy. “Youth participation in climate change advocacy has been tremendous,” he remarked. “I encourage the upcoming generation to emulate these efforts to make positive impacts in their communities and the environment at large.”
Lawal addressed the historical challenges posed by a lack of awareness about climate change resilience and urban afforestation. He emphasized the government’s commitment to partnerships aimed at achieving the smart city agenda. “We have caused enough problems in our society by not being enlightened enough about climate change resilience and urban afforestation,” he noted. “But as a government, we are open to partnerships to achieve our smart city goals.”
Commending the Honourable Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ola Oresanya, Lawal praised his support for youth involvement in environmental initiatives. He also advocated for more public spaces, increased public education, and widespread urban afforestation across Ogun State.
Lawal lauded Governor Prince Dr. Dapo Abiodun – MFR, CON for his dedication to a cleaner, greener, and smarter environment, citing the launch of the “Greener Book” as a significant step towards environmental compliance. “The Greener Book serves as a guideline for everyone to follow,” he stated.
In his closing remarks, Lawal highlighted the profound impact of tree planting. “Planting a tree may be simple, but its powerful impact on our environment and society cannot be overemphasized,” he concluded.
