Governor Alex Otti of Abia State took action Thursday night by signing into law a bill abolishing the payment of pensions to former Governors and their Deputies.
The Governor’s approval of the bill, titled the “Abia State Governors and Deputy Governors Pensions (Repeal) Law, 2024,” occurred just 48 hours after its passage by the Abia State House of Assembly.
The bill, spearheaded by the Leader of the House and representative of Arochukwu state constituency, Hon. Uchenna Kalu, gained swift momentum through the legislative process.
During the signing ceremony, Governor Otti emphasized that governance should prioritize the people’s interests over self-interest.
He commended the House of Assembly for promptly deliberating on the bill and underscored his administration’s commitment to transforming the state for the betterment of the populace.
“Even prior to the enactment of this new law, those familiar with our stance in national discourse know that we were adamant about discontinuing the practice of providing pensions and allowances to former government officials,” remarked Governor Otti.
