Motorists using the busy Lagos-Sagamu-Ijebu-Ode road can soon expect relief as palliative work will begin on the damaged sections next Monday.
The repairs are expected to be completed by mid-December this year. Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for the quick intervention.
After inspecting the damaged areas in Sagamu, the Minister of Works, Dr. Dave Umahi, expressed concern over the poor state of the road, which has caused significant hardship to motorists.
He explained that his visit was to assess the road and determine immediate steps to bring relief, ensuring that the federal government aims to have it fixed by the end of the year.
Conducted around the failed sections by Governor Abiodun, the Minister said, “I’m here under the direction of Mr. President, following our meeting with him, to take necessary action on this road so that the suffering of our people can be alleviated.
“The governor showed me the worst spots. Governance is about the people, and that’s what Mr. President is committed to. I am here with the Lagos and Ogun Works Controllers. We’ve formed an action team to collaborate with your own team, including the Commissioners for Works, Environment, and Transport.”
“In emergencies like this, we need a competent contractor nearby for quick intervention, and fortunately, we found Hitech.”
He added, “We’ve secured palliatives for both carriageways, covering 60 km each, totaling 120 km, and by the President’s directive, work will start by Monday.”
“It is my pleasure to instruct that palliative measures for the entire 120 km stretch of the Sagamu-Ijebu-Ode, Ore-Benin road be completed by mid-December.
“We will also install solar lighting along the 120 km stretch and ensure that by December 15, 2024, Governor Abiodun will inaugurate the road on behalf of President Bola Tinubu.”
Governor Abiodun, speaking earlier, shared the numerous complaints from motorists about the road’s poor condition and highlighted his administration’s palliative efforts to keep the road functional.
He thanked President Tinubu for his leadership and responsiveness, and commended the Minister for his dedication. He assured that with the launch of the rehabilitation work, motorists across the southern states and beyond will soon enjoy smoother travels.
