A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Segun Sowunmi, has declared that the party is the only hope for Nigerians amid the current economic difficulties.
Sowunmi assured Nigerians that the situation will improve once the PDP regains power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
He made this statement during the party’s local government congress on Saturday.
The congress, held across the 20 local government areas of the state, witnessed a large turnout of PDP supporters who came to elect their local executives.
Officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were present to monitor the exercise, which took place under tight security.
Segun Sowunmi, who was elected as a national delegate during the exercise, emphasized the importance of party unity to relieve Nigerians from the “APC’s imposed hardship.”
“The opposition must position itself as the hope of the people, and that’s why we are here,” Sowunmi said.
“After today, go back home, reconcile with your brothers and sisters. The umbrella is wide enough to accommodate all fair-minded and loyal party members,” he added.
Sowunmi commended the efforts of the party’s gubernatorial candidate, Ladi Abutu, for keeping the party united despite the internal crisis in Ogun State.
He argued that the party remained the rightful winner of the 2023 gubernatorial election in the state, “but it was rigged by the ruling party.”
“This is the party we have all worked hard for and continue to work for. We won’t tolerate those who are indecisive. You can’t be in PDP today and join another party tomorrow. Let’s stay united to win in 2027,” Sowunmi concluded.
