Operatives of the Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, have apprehended an alleged internet scammer, Joshua Olawuyi, for purportedly acquiring a vehicle under false pretenses and embezzling N30 million.
The Zonal Public Relations Officer, SP Umma Ayuba, confirmed the arrest in a statement released on Thursday in Lagos.
She stated that the command, under the leadership of Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Olatoye Durosinmi, arrested the suspect following a complaint.
“Based on a petition from Adesuwa Ogizie, a US-based licensed car dealer, it was reported that in 2016, Olawuyi contacted her to buy a Mercedes Benz GLE 350 worth N30 million.
“Olawuyi misled her by claiming that his brother, Jude Hanslem, would handle the payment on his behalf.
“After the vehicle was delivered to the suspect in Nigeria, the petitioner found out that the funds transferred to her account were proceeds of fraud,” she said.
Ayuba stated that a team of detectives from the Zonal Anti-Kidnapping Unit, led by SP Abass Gadzama, promptly acted on the case and apprehended the suspect.
“The suspect was detained and provided a statement admitting to the crime.
“He acknowledged his involvement in internet fraud at the time of the offense and stated that the Mercedes Benz GLE 350 had been sold, with the proceeds used for other purposes,” she said.
Ayuba noted that the investigation is ongoing, and further findings will be communicated. The suspect will be prosecuted accordingly upon the completion of the investigation.
