It’s my great pleasure to honor the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, HRH Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, on the occasion of his 90th birthday. It’s heartwarming to see Kabiyesi reaching this significant milestone while continuing to serve as the esteemed ruler of Ijebuland.
Oba Adetona isn’t just any traditional leader in Yorubaland, Nigeria, or even Africa; he’s an outstanding royal figure who has brought unique honour, integrity, and resilience to the throne over the past 60 years.
Throughout his reign, he’s witnessed both the challenging and triumphant moments in our nation’s history. During the turbulent periods of military rule when speaking truth to power was risky, Oba Adetona displayed remarkable courage and stood firmly on the side of the people. Amidst uncertainty and turmoil, he chose to anchor himself in truth.
Kabiyesi can reflect with gratitude on the significant progress Ijebuland has achieved during his peaceful leadership. Amongst his peers, he garners respect and admiration. More importantly, he’s seen his kingdom and its people flourish during his tenure.
I’ve always valued the trust and confidence I’ve shared with Kabiyesi Awujale Ogbagba II throughout my political career, from our joint struggle to restore democratic governance to my time as the Governor of Lagos State. Across these various stages, Oba Adetona has been a steady source of strength and support. He’s been a reliable ally in our quest for justice, fairness, and a more harmonious society where every part of our nation can thrive.
As my trusted confidant, I have complete faith in Awujale’s wisdom, and I’ve benefited from his guidance over the years. When I embarked on my journey for the presidency, I started my consultations at his palace in 2022. I later returned in June last year to express my gratitude and pay homage.
Oba Adetona has tirelessly advocated for democracy and good governance, even establishing an endowment for governance studies at Olabisi Onabanjo University in Ogun State.
His contributions have made him a highly respected royal leader not just in Yorubaland but globally. He’s one of the longest-serving monarchs, with over six decades on the throne.
Kabiyesi has lived an exemplary life and has served with distinction. We will continue to honor his commitment to public service and humanity.
Now that he has joined the distinguished Club of Nonagenarians, I wish him many more years in good health on the throne of his ancestors.
Happy birthday, Kabiyesi.
