President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will leave Abuja on Monday, January 6, for Accra, Ghana’s capital, to participate in the inauguration ceremony of President-elect John Dramani Mahama. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, January 7, 2025.
John Mahama, who previously served as Ghana’s 12th president from 2011 to 2017, was re-elected in December 2024. He will succeed President Nana Akuffo-Addo, whose tenure ran from 2017 to 2025.
According to a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, President Tinubu’s trip follows an invitation extended by Mahama during his visit to Nigeria in December 2024. The two leaders share a longstanding personal relationship, reflecting the close bilateral ties between Nigeria and Ghana.
In his capacity as the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Tinubu will join other African leaders at the inauguration ceremony.
The President will be accompanied by Mrs. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, alongside other senior government officials.
The visit underscores the importance of regional cooperation and the strong ties between Nigeria and Ghana.
