Real Madrid clinched the 2023/24 La Liga title on Saturday night after Barcelona suffered a surprise 4-2 defeat away at Girona. Earlier in the day, Real Madrid’s 3-0 victory over Cadiz had put them 14 points ahead of Barcelona.
This margin meant that Barcelona needed to win all remaining matches to stay in contention, but their loss at Girona ended any hope of catching Madrid.
This triumph marks Real Madrid’s 36th La Liga title, extending their lead over Barcelona’s 27 titles. Recovering the title from Barcelona was a top priority for Madrid this season, and the early-season momentum, driven by the exceptional performances of Jude Bellingham, helped Carlo Ancelotti’s squad gain a commanding lead.
Barcelona had a difficult start to the season, and they weren’t considered title contenders for the first six months. Instead, Girona, a surprise challenger, often stood at the top of the league during the season, presenting a tough competition for Madrid. However, Girona’s hot streak eventually cooled off, and Madrid, known for excelling under pressure, reclaimed their dominance and secured the title with four games to spare.
A significant factor in Madrid’s success has been their home form, remaining unbeaten at the Bernabeu throughout the season. Their only defeat came back in September when they lost 3-1 to Atletico Madrid in a local derby.
Real Madrid, the Supercopa de Espana champions, hope to finish the season with a third trophy, as they prepare for the second leg of their Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich on Wednesday.
