Senator Salisu Shuaib has expressed his commitment to work with the National Universities Commission (NUC), the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Council on Education, and other key stakeholders to potentially reinstate the suspended Management Courses at the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun State.
Shuaib suggested reviewing the decision to suspend the courses, highlighting that agriculture is a business and requires management skills to thrive.
The Senator pledged to do everything within his power to see that Accounting, Business Administration, Banking and Finance, Entrepreneurship, and Economics are restored to FUNAAB as study programs.
He also urged the university’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Olusola Kehinde, to outline the issues facing the university and share them with him for further action.
FUNAAB had discontinued management courses in 2017/18 following a federal government directive, ceasing admissions in those disciplines.
However, in a meeting with the university held at the request of the Senator, participants urged Shuaib, who represents Ogun Central, where FUNAAB is located, to help reinstate these academic programs.
They argued that these courses are crucial for agricultural studies, providing logistical support and business knowledge.
During the meeting, which included the Vice Chancellor, university management, leaders of various academic and non-academic unions, and student leaders at the New Senate building, Senator Shuaib encouraged FUNAAB to present a compelling proposal for the return of management courses, emphasizing that agricultural students would benefit from them as electives.
He also committed to addressing the poor condition of the FUNAAB–Alabata road, seeking a temporary fix while a permanent solution is developed.
Additionally, Shuaib said he would consider the university’s needs in the supplementary budget and in the upcoming budget cycle.
