The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a group allegedly entered the Government Secretariat vicinity in an attempt to seize control. Police spokesperson in Oyo, SP Adewale Osifeso, confirmed the apprehension of the suspects.
Police in Oyo have detained 20 individuals linked to the Yoruba nation movement over the purported invasion of the state’s House of Assembly complex in Ibadan.
The group allegedly invaded the complex located near the Government Secretariat, intending to seize control.
Police spokesperson in Oyo, SP Adewale Osifeso, confirmed the apprehension of the suspects in a statement issued in Ibadan.
Osifeso disclosed that the 20 detainees were found with three pump action guns, 29 life cartridges, two expended cartridges, 67 cutlasses, five bulletproof vests, and six pairs of boots.
Additionally, they possessed 10 Public Address Systems, three berets with Oodua insignia, seven belts, 11 Oodua Nation camouflage uniforms, one unregistered bus, and three motorcycles, he added.
Osifeso emphasized that the police, alongside sister security agencies, thwarted the attempt by the individuals to forcefully take over the secretariat.
“The suspects, dressed in military camouflage, arrived heavily armed in an unregistered bus, carrying cutlasses, pump action rifles, cartridges, assorted charms, and an Oodua Nation agitation flag.
“They were subdued and neutralized by officers and personnel from sister security agencies,” he stated.
Osifeso condemned the suspects’ actions as criminal, unpatriotic, and tantamount to treasonable felony and terrorism.
He assured that those found guilty would face appropriate punishment, while the police would uphold the safety of law-abiding citizens.
The spokesperson mentioned that the Commissioner of Police in Oyo, Mr. Adebola Hamzat, has ordered an investigation and expanded efforts to apprehend others involved in the incident.
