Tinubu meets Senegalese President, advocates for regional unity against terrorism, trafficking

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday welcomed President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal and emphasized the need for regional cooperation to tackle West Africa’s challenges.

During the meeting at the State House, President Tinubu stressed that West Africa must unite to combat terrorism, banditry, human trafficking, and poverty. He highlighted the importance of focusing on the people to maintain the essence of democracy.

Tinubu also underscored the necessity of respecting democratic governance, values, and constitutional order, emphasizing the significance of judicial institutions and the rule of law.

“Senegal has demonstrated the beauty of constitutional democracy to Africa and the world. It is a pleasure to host you as we address our youth’s hopes and aspirations,” Tinubu remarked.

He praised Nigeria and Senegal’s long-standing cooperation, noting their shared interest in sustaining democracy for their citizens’ benefit.

“As ECOWAS Chairman, I invite you to collaborate with us and engage other leaders in strengthening our democratic commitments. Our partnership should focus on defeating human trafficking, terrorism, banditry, and poverty,” Tinubu added.

President Faye acknowledged the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and Senegal, calling for the reactivation of the Nigeria-Senegal joint commission to enhance bilateral relations in diplomacy, trade, and other areas.

With President Tinubu’s guidance, Faye expressed confidence that ECOWAS could strengthen member state relations and advance regional integration.

“ECOWAS represents successful regional integration. Your wisdom and our shared democratic values can help us overcome current challenges,” Faye stated.

Faye, recently elected, emphasized the need for unity in addressing issues like human trafficking and migrant smuggling, highlighting the economic benefits of collaboration.

In a related event, Faye was granted honorary citizenship of Abuja by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who represented President Tinubu at the airport reception.

President Faye received the symbolic key to the city and the rights and privileges of an Abuja citizen, celebrating the enduring friendship between Nigeria and Senegal.
