Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has urged security agencies to develop effective strategies to ensure the safety of lives and property during the festive season.
The governor made the appeal while receiving the new Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, Mr. Lanre Ogunlowo, during a courtesy visit to his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
Acknowledging the efforts of security agencies in maintaining peace, Abiodun warned of potential threats posed by individuals who might exploit the season for criminal activities.
He said, “As we approach the yuletide period, this time often presents unique challenges. Those who engage in nefarious activities and quick-money schemes tend to become more desperate. I urge you to develop strategies to ensure the period is peaceful, allowing everyone to celebrate without fear or concern over security breaches.”
The governor encouraged inter-agency collaboration, noting, “I enjoin your colleagues to cooperate with you as they did with your predecessor, so we can continue building the future of Ogun State and achieve our collective dreams.”
Abiodun highlighted Ogun’s unique geographical position, sharing borders with four states and an international boundary, which attracts a diverse population but also raises security concerns. He informed the new police chief of his administration’s efforts to bolster security, including the revitalization of the State Security Trust Fund to equip agencies with modern tools, ensuring Ogun remains one of the most peaceful states in the nation.
He emphasized the importance of security in driving socio-economic development, stating, “You cannot have socio-economic progress in an atmosphere of insecurity. Even the perception of insecurity discourages investment, regardless of the infrastructure in place.”
The governor also urged the police commissioner to address the issue of cultism prevalent in some parts of the state, working in synergy with other security agencies to find lasting solutions.
Abiodun commended the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for deploying a competent officer to the state, supported by two Armoured Personnel Carriers. “I thank the IGP for entrusting Ogun State with such a capable officer. His qualifications and practical experience make him well-suited for the role,” Abiodun added.
He assured that his administration would continue supporting the State Police Command and other agencies to maintain peace and security across Ogun State.
In his response, the new Commissioner of Police, Mr. Lanre Ogunlowo, pledged to enhance the existing security framework with support from the state government and collaboration with other agencies.
“I am here to build on what has already been achieved. The Inspector General has also approved additional Armoured Personnel Carriers for the state, which will further strengthen our capabilities,” Ogunlowo stated.
He promised to tackle cultism and other security issues while urging residents to support the police in achieving their mandate. “Let’s enjoy the season responsibly and ensure peace. Criminals should steer clear, as we are prepared to secure Ogun State for its residents,” he concluded.
